New York firefighter who received full face transplant is adjusting to 'new normal'

It took surgeons more than 26 hours to cut away skin from Hardison's face (left) and attach the donor face (right immediately after operation)

Hardison's face was little more than scar tissue (left) before he had the operation to attach the donor face (pictured center three months after operation, and right now)

Hardison's appearance has changed dramatically over the last year as his new face has fitted to his skull, while further surgery removed the need for a breathing tube

Hardison says that in the year since his groundbreaking 26-hour operation he has adjusted to a 'new normal', saying he no longer gets stared at on the street

Patrick Hardison, 42, a father-of-five whose face was destroyed while he was fighting a fire back in 2001, has spoken of life since he had a full-face transplant (pictured Wednesday)

The true scale of the team required to give Hardison his new lease of life is revealed in this image, showing all those who were involved in his surgery

Hardison was forced to undergo regular surgeries after his accident, having on average seven per year, until his face transplant a year ago (pictured during a check-up)

Since getting his new face, Hardison says he has the confidence to do things he never would have otherwise, including going to Disney World with his children

Hardison said that while at the theme park he was able to go into the pool, which is the first time in 15 years he has gone swimming

Hardison says that while most people know from his appearance that something has happened to him, few can guess he had a full face transplant

Hardison has also been able to return to the gym, something he felt unable to do before

Hardison also revisited the fire station he worked at before his accident, saying he still has to resist the urge to attend call-outs

A plaque commemorating Hardison's service to the station has been erected in his honor
